I Don’t Know What I Want to Do
We could probably include this one in the translating government experience section: "I don't know what I want to do" is the sentence I hear more than any other on a first career coaching call.
I said it too. When I finally decided that it was time to leave federal service, leave the CIA, I had no idea who I would be without the mission, let alone what I wanted next. It took me a lot longer than it should have to figure that out. I got there in the end: Tesla first, then OpenAI, and eventually entirely focused on helping others make their own pivot.
Over the past few years I've heard a version of this lost feeling again and again and again. Working with a coach 1:1 is the fastest way through, but it also takes time and money that a lot of people don't have right now. That gap has bothered me for a long time.
So I built the thing that would have really helped me back then. I've been heads-down on it since February, but the frameworks inside it go back years, to my own pivot, and to five years as an ICF-certified coach working with clients and mentees.
And in September 2026, MissionPivot™ went live!
MissionPivot™ walks you through the part almost everyone skips: getting clear on what you want, finding the environments that will enable you to do your best work, and building the relationships that get you in the door. One to two hours, on your own, before you touch another application.
It won't hand you a job, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. What you walk out with is a list of organizations/companies that really fit you and a plan for getting into them.
There's a free five-minute assessment if you just want to know where your search might be stuck and get some quick advice.

I'm SO glad MissionPivot™ is finally out in the world! If you try it, please reach out and tell me how it goes. That's the part I'm looking forward to the most!
