Preparing For a Networking Call

Want to network effectively as you transition from government to big tech? The prep you do before the call matters more than you might think!

I’ve heard from many friends who’ve moved from government roles into big tech companies that a common frustration is receiving calls from people who haven’t done their homework. They get on a call with someone they don't really know, and hear, "I want to work in big tech. Can you get me a job?"

Spoiler: they usually didn’t, because they expected the person on the other end of the Zoom to do the work for them.

So, how do you prepare?

--> Reflect on your goals.

--> Research roles ahead of time.

--> Understand how you can add value.

--> And most importantly: come with a specific goal for the conversation. That might be to learn about life at a particular company or to seek a reference for a specific job, etc.

And if you’re not sure how to do this preparation, coaching can make a world of difference! A good career coach can guide you through the process, helping you clarify your goals and craft a compelling narrative.

By putting in this effort ahead of time, you ensure that your networking conversations are meaningful and productive for everyone involved!
