Has anyone else watched a team conversation derail in record time?
I’ve seen it more times than I’d like to admit. I remember watching two teammates go from a light joke to total shutdown in under a minute. One person snapped back, the other pulled away, and the tension sat with the whole team.
I also watched a senior leader come in a little too hot with a key partner. The partner bristled, the conversation stalled, and the working relationship took a big hit.
Different people, different stakes, same pattern. One sharp remark, one defensive reaction, and communication collapses.
What gets me is how preventable it usually is. One pause, one moment of curiosity, could change the entire trajectory. Instead, defensiveness takes over, and trust erodes fast.
So here’s your reminder: when you feel that heat in your chest, take a breath and ask yourself what else could be true and what is the other person bringing into the conversation that has nothing to do with you? Curiosity won’t fix everything, but it can keep you from eroding trust in the moment.
