Want to Get Ahead? Focus on the People, Not Just the Work
Want to get ahead at work? Start by remembering the little things about people.
Too often, we think career growth is only about skills, performance, and strategy. And while those matter, the connections we build with the people around us are just as important, so we need to be intentional about it!
Gallup research has shown that having a best friend at work is one of the strongest predictors of morale and engagement. That doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when you lead with empathy and get curious about the people around you:
—> Ask questions.
—> Really listen.
—> Remember one detail about each person’s life that you can follow up on later.
Maybe your coworker mentioned training for a marathon, celebrating a child’s birthday, or organizing a community event. When I hear those things, I add them to my calendar so I can check in later: wish them luck, say happy birthday, or simply let them know I remembered.
These are small acts, but they carry a big message: I see you. I care about what matters TO YOU.
When you make people feel seen, you not only strengthen relationships, you build the kind of reputation that speaks for you in every room, even when you’re not there!
